Job Description

About Kin: Founded in 2016, Kin is an elite, high-growth insurtech pioneer restructuring the traditional homeownership ecosystem. By utilizing advanced data modeling, technology integrations, and thoughtful human support, Kin delivers clear, fair, and affordable home insurance solutions engineered explicitly for modern climate risks and volatile macroeconomic conditions. Operating as a remote-first tech player recognized across Forbes’ America’s Best Startup Employers and the Inc. 5000 lists, Kin scales seamlessly across multiple domains—incorporating home, auto, and flood lines—to deliver cohesive connected experiences that transform how millions of homeowners protect their lives and properties.

Position Overview

We are seeking a highly autonomous, systems-fluent, and architecture-minded Principal Product Designer, Design Systems to join our centralized UX / UI organization under a permanent, full-time remote configuration open across the United States. In this high-leverage individual contributor (IC) seat, you will treat the enterprise design system as a living product, claiming absolute ownership over our multi-brand token layers, Figma-to-code parity pipelines, and federated contribution governance. Shifting completely away from routine static banner production, localized copy tweaks, or simple mechanical data formatting, you will direct an active visual standardization, automated accessibility testing, and design-tokens automation laboratory—collaborating face-to-face with product managers, senior engineering squads, and embedded product designers. This position requires a product design authority with 7+ years of experience who structures system tokens fluidly natively using UI/UX Design models, audits cross-channel component drift using advanced AI toolchains (e.g., Claude Code, Cursor), manages multi-account token transformations cleanly via Style Dictionary workflows, and drives system adoption through influence and documented canonical references across the entire product suite.

Key Responsibilities

  • Token Architecture Governance: Design, implement, and maintain Kin’s global design token structures spanning primitive, semantic, and component levels natively utilizing UI/UX Design paradigms.
  • Figma-to-Code Parity Engineering: Partner directly with core front-end engineering squads to build and enforce a robust pipeline syncing Figma variables and design nodes into production component code libraries.
  • AI-Augmented System Auditing: Leverage automated development toolchains (such as Cursor and Claude Code ) to audit active user interfaces, trace layout inconsistencies, and construct data-backed system alignment roadmaps.
  • Contribution and Governance Modeling: Author, document, and defend a clear system intake, version control, change-logging, and contribution framework that enables distributed teams to extend patterns without causing fragmentation.
  • Accessibility Automation & Testing: Embed deep web accessibility requirements into core UI elements, deploying AI-assisted testing scripts to guarantee WCAG compliance guidelines are inherited by default across all domain branches.
  • Multi-Domain Expansion Mapping: Formulate scalable component variations and interface rules thoughtfully as Kin continues its rapid entry into new asset horizons (including auto, property tax, and financing applications).
  • Cross-Functional System Advocacy: Coordinate with distributed engineering units to monitor token processing pipelines, evaluating how design variables map into real front-end structures like Storybook, Chromatic, Style Dictionary, Angular, or Rails stacks.

Required Skills & Qualifications

  • A minimum of 7+ years of proven professional history operating inside a Senior Product Designer, Design Systems Architect, Lead Frontend Designer, or identical advanced user interface engineering capacity.
  • Expert Systems Design Mastery: Extensive, granular history taking a comprehensive enterprise design system from initial audit and token architecture stages through to wide adoption across multi-brand surfaces.
  • Advanced production-grade command over Figma as a systems engineering tool, with complete fluency managing variables, complex nested libraries, and responsive modes.
  • Demonstrated ability to use advanced generative code tools (e.g., Cursor, Claude Code) to automate component documentation and accelerate the design-to-code feedback loop.
  • Outstanding cross-functional alignment and communication strengths in English, with an established capacity to influence without positional authority across a federated, domain-based organization.
  • Location Context: Position operates under remote guidelines open exclusively to qualified product designers residing permanently within the United States .

Preferred Strategic Indicators (Nice to Have)

  • Prior technical design or systems engineering history operating within the insurance, financial tech, banking SaaS, or highly complex regulated product domains .
  • Practical framework comfort reading, reviewing, or directly contributing code to frontend repositories, showing familiarity with Storybook/Chromatic, Style Dictionary , or styling files within Angular/Rails stacks.
  • Experience navigating rapid growth phases inside venture-backed or publicly recognized modern technology firms.

What We Offer

  • Top-Tier US Product Design Remuneration: A highly competitive annual base salary structure of $190,000 - $210,000 USD , supplemented by valuable Restricted Stock Units (RSUs) equity options and additional bonus opportunities via the Kin Leadership Incentive Plan.
  • 100% remote workspace infrastructure freedom across supported states, paired with an optional co-working office environment in downtown Boston, MA.
  • Direct Foundational System Ownership: Elite professional credentials built by commanding the definitive visual and architectural source of truth for an expanding insurtech leader.
  • Comprehensive health preservation benefits, providing high-tier Medical, Dental, and Vision coverage packages alongside company-funded HSA structures.
  • Generous flexible Paid Time Off (PTO) allowances, 401(k) company matching up to 4%, 8 company holidays, and excellent paid parental leave up to 14 weeks at 100% pay for birthing parents.
