Job Description

Art on the Block NYC was established with the dual purpose of making art more accessible to the public and offering practicing artists a venue to create and display their artwork. Art on the Block NYC offers artists a short-term residency in a NYC storefront, during which they transform the space into their studio, exhibition space, and public programming venue. The artist works on-site during the duration of their residency so that community members can walk in and engage with their process.

Position Overview

We are hiring two friendly and mission-driven Gallery Assistants to support visitor experience and daily operations at our art space on the Upper West Side. This role is ideal for someone who enjoys connecting with people, has an appreciation for the arts, and wants to contribute meaningfully to a nonprofit organization.

This is a part-time, in-person, hourly position. Reporting to the program coordinator and executive director, gallery assistants will work in person at our art space at 107 W 86th St on Saturdays (occasional week days as needed) when residencies and exhibitions are open to the public. This role requires availability from 11am to 6pm the following dates:

  • Saturday, June 27
  • Friday, July 10
  • Saturdays in August: 8, 15, 22
  • Saturdays in September: 19, 26
  • Saturdays in October: 3, 10, 17, 24
  • Saturdays in November: 7, 14, 21
  • Saturdays in December: 6, 12

Final schedule to be determined upon hire.

Primary Responsibilities

  • Serve as a welcoming first point of contact for visitors, artists, and members of the public
  • Provide information about current and upcoming residency exhibitions, programs, and events
  • Help facilitate public programming for children, families, and the general public
  • Assist with the sale of artwork, process transactions accurately using the point-of-sale system
  • Maintain a clean, organized, and professionally presented gallery space

Qualifications

  • Prior experience in customer service, retail, or arts administration preferred
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills
  • Comfort handling cash transactions and basic data entry
  • Familiarity with or enthusiasm for the visual arts
  • Commitment to the organization's mission and values

Compensation

$19 an hour, with a one-hour paid lunch break.
