Job Description and Duties

The Environmental Scientist will help administer the California Monitoring Program (CMP) with a specific focus on Southern California steelhead in the South Coast Region under the close supervision of the Senior Environmental Scientist Supervisor. The Environmental Scientist will oversee daily operations of field schedule, including coordinating with external partners, data collection, and data analysis. The incumbent will administer restoration grants overseeing compliance, deliverables, and invoicing.


Main functions include coordinating fisheries surveys, managing grants, managing and analyzing data, and reporting. The Environmental Scientist will schedule up to nine field crew members. The role requires the ability to track and analyze large datasets for dissemination in memos, reports, and presentations. Grant management requires strong communication and organizational skills. This dynamic position coordinates within the region, across the state, and with many external partners.

This position may be eligible for a telework opportunity in accordance with departmental policies and operational needs. Beginning July 1, 2026, employees will be required to work in-person at least four (4) days per week in alignment with Executive Order N-22-25. Additional in-office days may be required based on operational needs.

This position is a 12-month Limited Term (LT) and may be extended up to 24 months or become permanent.

Working Conditions

The position will be based in the Santa Barbara Field Office. The position will routinely need to conduct fieldwork in wet and dry conditions carrying bulky items. The position may need to attend scheduled meetings and training in the Seal Beach Office, the San Diego Office, and throughout the state, which would require overnight travel no more than 5% of the time.

Special Requirements

Physically fit and able to carry up to 40 pounds of gear for up to 8 hours a day. Must be able to swim and be able to tread water for at least 5 minutes.
